They are often called “Round Diamonds” or “Tolkowsky’s Cut”. They are the most expensive cut. To cut an unpolished stone in to any other shape , usually allows more carat weight to be retained but the round brilliant cut is designed to reflect almost all the light that touches it.
For a Diamond cutter, it takes 4 to 5 times more longer to cut a round Diamond to ideal proportion for the highest polish and symmetry rating than it does to cut a Diamond to average cut parameters.
