Since vedic times, India appears to have been the only
source of this valuable gem until about the early 18th
century when Diamonds were discovered in bomes and lately
elsewhere. By this time, Diamond mining in India had practically
ceased to exist.
Although ancient Sanskrit texts mention several areas
where Diamonds were found especially in South India. Fewer
quantities of Diamonds are still picked up occasionally
from some locations in South India but regular production
at present comes only from a single mine and numerous
shallow working in the Panna district of Madhya Pradesh.
India is also main hub for cutting and polishing of rough
Diamonds. Nine out of every ten Diamonds are cut and polished
in India.
